Writing Workshop & Celebrating Students

Building a Community of Writers
Ramseur Elementary identified writing as an area of improvement as a part of our core analysis. Teachers are implementing Writer’s Workshop using the Being a Writer Curriculum and Patterns of Power. Students are tapping into their inner writers as they build upon their writing skills. Students have been excited to personalize the covers of their writing journals/notebooks and have enjoyed using their creativity to fill the pages. Ramseur’s fifth graders have taken off, full steam ahead, and just completed their first writing celebration. Students went through a series of lessons on what it means to be a good writer, and then tried their hand at writing their first entries about their future goals. Some students wrote about their aspirations of becoming a marine, while others spoke of opening their own restaurant one day. Ms Bowser, a fifth grade teacher, took the students deeper into their goals and had them explore the reasons behind their future plans. Students discovered that their family and community members had inspired their goals the most. Once the writing process had been completed and students went through multiple edits, it was time to celebrate! The pictures below shows those students who share their final products with the class, as well as the setup for the celebration. Celebrating our students’ writing achievements has been a part of their excitement and success thus far.
